Peter Erickson: Publishes "'Othello's Back': Othello as Mock Tragedy in Rita Dove's Sonata Mulattica"

Posted Oct. 31, 2011: Peter Erickson, visiting professor of humaniities, has published “‘Othello’s Back’: Othello as Mock Tragedy in Rita Dove’s Sonata Mulattica” in the fall 2011 issue of JNT: Journal of Narrative Theory. The article shows how, in her latest volume of poetry, Dove rescues her main character–black violinist George Augustus Polgreen Bridgetower (1780-1860)–from an Othello-like fate when Beethovan abruptly withdraws his musical sponsorship in protest against Bridgetower’s approach to a white woman.
