Peter Erickson: "Reconfiguring Blackface in the Art of Glenn Ligon and Fred Wilson"

Posted May 1: Peter Erickson, visiting professor of humanities, has published “Black Like Me: Reconfiguring Blackface in the Art of Glenn Ligon and Fred Wilson,” in Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art 25 (2010). The article shows how two African American artists address a standard text fromĀ  the early Civil Rights Movement, Black Like Me (1961) by the white author John Howard Griffin. Each artist creates a cross-media translation in which the original text is critically exposed by a visual counter-narrative. To change the medium is to challenge the story.
