Morgan McGuire: Best Paper Presentation Award

Posted March 18, 2014: Associate Professor of Computer Science Morgan McGuire and his coauthor Louis Bavoil of NVIDIA were awarded the best paper presentation award at the 2014 ACM Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics and Games for their work on Weighted, Blended Order-Independent Transparency, published in the Journal of Computer Graphics Techniques.

Their work advances the state of the art for computer generated images of 3D scenes that contain computationally-difficult compositing elements including glass, fog, water, and foliage. The new method approximates the image using constant memory and linear time per pixel, in comparison to the linear storage cost and super-linear comparison sort of an A-buffer or k-buffer. They show how to implement blended transparency for a broad variety of target platforms, including game consoles, WebGL, and high-end mobile devices.
