Peter Erickson: Publishes "Probing White Guilt, Pursuing White Redemption"

Posted Nov. 17, 2011: Peter Erickson, visiting professor of humanities, has published “Probing White Guilt, Pursuing White Redemption: William Kentridge’s 9 Drawings for Projection” in Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art 28 (2011). The series of nine animated films by the white South African artist shows how the quest for full understanding by whites of their legacy of racial aparteid is tricky because of the fine line between white self-examination and white self-pity. The latter short-circuits awareness by making it too easy to credit good effort as all that counts, while failing carefully to evaluate the actual result and hence excusing insufficient achievement.
