"Frederick Douglass and Barack Obama"

Neil Roberts, assistant professor of Africana Studies and faculty affiliate in political science, delivered a lecture titled “Frederick Douglass and Barack Obama: Fugitive Refashioning of American Democracy” at The Julliard School in February.  In his talk, Robers explored the connection between President Obama and the American abolitionist and statesman of the 19th century, Frederick Douglass.  Roberts finds the comparison to Douglass, a biracial man who freed himself from slavery, to be more historically enlightening than the more common linking of Obama to Lincoln.
